Student Poster Competition

The Land Use 2016 Student Poster Competition has now ended. Click here to see the which students were selected to participate, and to see who won!

The Alberta Land Institute invites interested undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to submit abstracts for Land Use 2016. Posters must pertain to land use challenges, and related policy issues in Canada or Alberta in the following areas:

  • Agriculture
  • Municipal Development
  • Governance and Regulation
  • Water
  • Energy
  • Recreation
  • Transportation and Utility
  • Forestry

ALI supports multidisciplinary research and abstracts are invited from any discipline (e.g., biology, economics, environmental sciences, planning, political science, law, etc.). The poster session will allow for significant interaction between poster presenters and conference attendees. Registration fees for the conference will be waived for student presenters for up to 20 accepted posters.

 

PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED TO THE TOP THREE POSTERS:

$300 for the First Place Poster

$150 for the Second and Third Place Posters

First Place Winner will have the opportunity to deliver a 3-minute presentation to conference attendees. All winners will be featured on the ALI’s website and in our newsletter. Please note that travel and accommodation costs to attend the Edmonton conference will not be provided.

 

COMPETITION INFORMATION

Abstracts will be accepted until February 29, 2016. Presenting authors will be notified of acceptance as soon as possible to allow sufficient time to make travel arrangements. Please note that presenting authors (who must be undergraduate or graduate students) must be available to discuss their posters with conference participants during the Student Poster Session on May 4, 2016.

Posters must present original, completed or ‘in progress’ research by the author(s). Abstracts for studies which are ‘in progress’ or for which data acquisition and analysis are incomplete or absent, should include a hypothesis of results or preliminary findings.

If accepted, the poster presentation must cover the same content as described in the abstract. Accepted posters should be no larger than 36 by 48 inches (92 x 122 cm). Information should be summarized using brief written statements and graphic materials, such as photographs, charts, graphs and diagrams. The poster title and authors of accepted abstracts will be published in the Land Use 2016 program.

Poster presentations will be evaluated by a panel of judges on-site to determine the three winning submissions. Winners will be announced at the conference on May 5, 2016.

 

GUIDELINES FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

Abstracts for posters must be no longer than 1000 words and must include the following information in order to be accepted:

  • Authors: Please list all of the authors on the project, including First Name, Last Name, Designation(s), Title, Affiliation.
    • Indicate presenting author who will be on-site at Land Use 2016. The presenting author must be an undergraduate student, graduate student or postdoctoral fellow.
  • Policy Stream: Please indicate the major area(s) of land use policy addressed by the research:
    • Agriculture
    • Municipal Development
    • Governance and Regulation
    • Water
    • Energy
    • Recreation
    • Transportation and Utility
    • Forestry
  • Purpose/Rationale: What is the major reason for doing this study?
  • Objectives: Define objectives for the research.
  • Relevance: How does this study relate to land-use planning challenges in Canada/Alberta?
  • Methods and Materials: What research methods were used to collect the data? What materials were included within this methodology?
  • Analysis: Describe the type(s) of analyses used interpret data.
  • Results/Preliminary Results/Hypothesis: Briefly summarize the data derived from analyses.
  • Conclusions: What can be concluded that is important to land use planning issues or policy in Canada/Alberta?
